My fascination with motels (or motor lodges, as they were affectionately called) started at a young age. I grew up on Long Island, very close to one of those iconic mid-century buildings with the orange roof and wood-paneled ice cream parlor.
I remember my mother taking me there for ice cream and being in awe of the majesty of it all. It seemed that the guests had traveled from all over the country, and seeing cars with out-of-state license plates made me realize there was a much bigger world beyond the one I knew.
I told myself that if I ever had the chance, I would travel across the country and stay in a Howard Johnson Motor Lodge myself one day…
